Entertainment

Traditionally, several musical events are organised during the summer school. This year we had three: two musical performances and one tango lesson. From the performances photos and audio recordings have been made.

A regular day at Karthaus

Venue

The village community building (Dorfsgemeinschaft Haus) comfortably accommodated all the school's official activities.

Day program

Each day lectures started at 8:30 and lasted until lunch time (13:00). The lunch often took place on the terrace, where we could enjoy the salad bar, pasta and desserts. The formal program then resumed with exercise classes and computer project work. Twelve groups of three students each were assigned computer projects supervised by one of the lecturers. By performing numerical experiments and playing around with different numbers, students got a taste of glaciology-related process. The results of the projects were presented on the last day of the summer school.

The complete programme is available in PDF.

Evening program

In their spare-time, the participants could enjoy the different outdoor pursuits that the surroundings of Karthaus offer. Many went for a hike to the Kreuzspitze (2484m), a mountain top south of the village. Just below the summit, an enormous cross has been erected, visible from the village. The walk could be done in anything between 56'44" (2005 record of Thomas Reerink) and three hours.

Dangerous situations could arise on the Kreuzspitze.

Some students also took benefit of table tennis or visited the hotel sauna between the end of the official program and the well deserved five courses dinner.

Fierce battles were fought at the pingpong table.

Of course, then there were the dancing lessons by Hilmar (tango), Christoph (disco-fox) and Jenny (Scottish cèilidhs).

Dancing fun.

And last but definitely not least, the musical performances on Sunday and Friday by Tijn, Carlo, Frank and Hans.
