Date: March 5 and 6, 2001,
Location: conference center "De Plasmolen" in Mook (near Nijmegen)

Organisation

  • prof. dr. C.H.A. Koster (KUN)
  • dr.F.Wiesman (UM).
Deadline for registration for SIKS-Ph.D.-students: february 5 2001!
After that date, applications to participate will be honoured in a first-come first-serve manner.

Aim of the course

The objective of this course is to familiarize Ph.D.-students and advanced undergraduate students in Computer Science and neighbouring areas with the fundamental ideas and methods of modern Full-text Information Retrieval. The course fits into the "Advanced Components stage" of the SIKS educational programme. Therefore, SIKS-Ph.D.-students are strongly encouraged to participate.

Full-text Information Retrieval is a wide area, which in spite of its long tradition shows a great activity, thanks to the Internet: the world-wide search in large collections of online documents is no longer a highly specialized skill for librarians or documentalists, but is considered an essential part of all scientific endeavour. Although Dutch researchers play an active part in the international research on Information Retrieval, Dutch universities still offer few courses on the subject (and there is not even a Dutch name for this area).

The present course, which is given by experienced lectures actively involved in IR research, is intended to fill that lacuna. This first SIKS PhD course in IR is focused on the general concepts, fundaments and methods of full-text Information Retrieval. Their many applications, more specialized methods and deeper linguistic techniques will be dealt with later.

Registration

In the conference center there is a limited number of places and there is interest from other groups in the topic as well. Therefore, an early registration is required. Deadline for registration for SIKS-Ph.D.-students: february 5 2001. After that date, applications to participate will be honoured in a first-come first-serve manner.
Of course, applications to participate from other interested groups are welcome already. They will receive a notification whether they can participate as soon as possible.

Anyone who is interested in the courses, is kindly requested to contact mrs. Joyce Bouwsma for registration! You can reach her preferably by e-mail: joyce@cs.uu.nl Please inform her whether you are a SIKS Ph.D.-Student or not and whether you are a vegetarean or not. After your registration you will receive the final program and other details about the courses as soon as they are available. All participants will receive detailed traveling instructions. For further questions regarding the content of the course and the educational program, please contact the coordinator of SIKS.

Cancellation regulation: If registration is cancelled before February 19 2001, the course fee may be refunded. After February 19, no reimbursement is possible.
