Zur Goldenen Rose

The Karthaus summer school was accommodated in the excellent hotel Zur Goldenen Rose.

Karthaus

Music

Traditionally the summer school has several musical events. This year we had two, both after dinner: one on Saturday the 13th and the other on Friday the 19th. Lyrics and more can be found here.

Videos

Some participants were not only truly artistic photographers, but also made a few nice videos. You can check them here.

Food

Italy is known for its great food. Go to this page for an overview of the Schnastal valley cuisine.

A regular day in Karthaus

Apart from all the singing nights, excursions, sheep and so on, we also had "normal" days. A normal day usually started by waking up by the church bells at 7h in the morning. After that, we tried to get some more moments of sleep before going out of bed. The breakfast started at around 7.45am, but some persons started their breakfast at 8.26am before going to the lecture at 8.27am. The breakfast offered a wide choice of fresh breads, fruits and very nice coffee and tea, which greatly improved our mood, which was ruined by the church bells. At 8.30am, the lectures started and until lunch we had 4 lectures of about 50 minutes each and a (coffee) break in between. At 12.45am we could go eat again, starting lunch with a nice salad, followed by pasta and a heavenly dessert. We had some days on which we could sit outside for lunch, which was also very nice.

The early morning wake up callWorking on the projects

The village community building (Haus der Dorfgemeinschaft) comfortably accommodated all the summer school activities. The afternoon, starting at 2pm and finishing at 5.30pm, was spent making exercises and doing a computer project. Twelve groups of three students each were assigned a computer project. By doing numerical experiments and fiddling with different numbers (making a walk through parameter space), students got a feeling for a certain glaciology-related process.

The complete programme is available as a pdf.

In their spare-time, the participants enjoyed the different outdoor pursuits that the surroundings of Karthaus have to offer. Many went for a hike to the Kreuzspitze (2484m), a mountaintop south of the village. Just below the summit an enormous cross has been erected, visible from the village. The walk could be done in anything between 56m44s (2005 record of Thomas Reerink) and three hours. On many days a football or frisbee match has been played between the end of the official program and dinner (7.30pm).
